Since 2001 the aim of Books in Homes is to increase literacy skills in low socio economic schools through the provision of books to disadvantaged children throughout the year and to encourage a love of reading.
The Goodman Foundation fund the programme in Telopea Public School in Ryde and Plunkett Public School in Woolloomooloo assisting over 130 children to select and own their own reading books. Each school term the children choose 3 books to keep so 9 books per year.
Goodman staff attend the school assembly to hand out the books to the children and give it a sense of importance and occasion reinforcing to the children how important books are in their young lives.
