The Shepherd Centre

Goodman Foundation is now supporting The Shepherd Centre through Reach out, Connect and Communicate: a video conferencing project which reaches out to deaf children in rural and remote communities and teaches them how to listen and speak.

The Shepherd Centre’s mission is to help all children who are deaf or hearing impaired, in NSW and ACT, achieve the best listening and spoken language they are capable of. They now help around 550 children and families through their five centres in NSW & ACT, as well as families in rural and remote areas of Australia and overseas via Reach out, Connect and Communicate and intensive residential workshops. The Shepherd Centre provides children with hearing loss a specialised family centred, multidisciplinary, early intervention and paediatric cochlear implant programme. Every year more than 90% of Shepherd Centre graduates (5-6yrs old) reach “age appropriate language” on par with their hearing peers and attend mainstream schools.
